William Packer was an old soldier. Born in Northampton, he enlisted in the army as far back as 1881, and had seen service in India for nine years, took part in the 1884 Sikkim expedition and had served in the South African War. After his discharge, he came to Derby where he took up employment with Messrs. Haslam’s foundry, before taking a position with Messrs. Handyside’s foundry for almost fifteen years. He was also secretary to the Derwent Ward Conservative Association.
At the time of his re-enlistment in 1914, he was living at 22, Mansfield Street, Derby. He was killed by a shell in the trenches near Loos, whilst serving with the 12th Battalion of Pioneers, at the age of 53.
